1. Those Ceramic Fuses are Literal Fossils 🦖
If you open your switchboard and see those white, ceramic pull-out fuses with the thin wire wrapped around them, your home is basically living in the Stone Age. These old-school fuses were designed to protect your wires from catching fire, but they do almost nothing to protect you from an electric shock.
Modern switchboards use Circuit Breakers and RCDs (Residual Current Devices) that act in milliseconds. If your board still looks like a museum exhibit, it’s time for a modern glow-up.
2. Safety Switches vs. Circuit Breakers: They Aren’t the Same!
This is the number one thing people get confused about.
- Circuit Breakers protect your house from an overload (like when you plug in too many heaters).
- Safety Switches (RCDs) protect people. They monitor the flow of electricity and shut it off instantly if they detect a leak to the earth (like if a toaster becomes live).
Under the current AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, almost all circuits in a residential home must have RCD protection. If you don't have them, you're missing the most important safety feature in modern electrical history.
3. The "Victorian Rental Minimum Standards" Are No Joke 📜
Are you a Gippsland landlord? Listen up! As of March 29, 2023, all Victorian rental properties must have modern safety switch protection on all power and lighting circuits.
